The Valley Council presented the following awards at its
annual meeting sponsored by
Naugatuck Savings Bank at Grassy Hill Lodge on
December 2, 2008:
The
Agency/Program of the Year Award
recognizes a nonprofit agency whose employees and volunteers have made a
significant and lasting contribution to the health and well being of Lower
Naugatuck Valley residents. This year’s award was presented to the
Corporate Volunteer Council
of the Valley United Way. Since 1995, the Corporate Volunteer
Council has had an enormous impact on the lives of Valley residents through its
Weeks of Caring, Back to School Clothes for Kids campaign, and numerous
additional volunteer efforts to benefit the community.
The
Lewis E. Savitsky Staff Excellence Award,
named in honor of a long-time Valley United Way employee and community leader,
is presented to
an individual for outstanding achievement as an employee in the non-profit
community. This year’s honoree is Elizabeth Holcomb, Director of
Operations for Area Congregations Together, Inc. In her 20 years working at
Area Congregations Together, Elizabeth Holcomb has demonstrated her deep
commitment to improving services to the community through such critical efforts
as Spooner House and the Valley Food Bank.
The Valley
Council has added a third award this year: the Richard O. Belden Community
Service Award. The award, named in honor of late State representative
Richard O. Belden, is given to an organization or individual outside the
non-profit sector whose efforts have made a significant contribution to
improving the quality of life of Valley residents. The first Belden Community
Service award will be presented by Bertha Belden in honor of her late husband’s
legacy. The award recipient is the
City of Shelton, in
recognition of its exemplary support for the efforts of local non-profit
organizations and its commitment to improving services to the community.
