Carol Aimone, immediate Past President of Valley United Way accepts the "Agency of the Year" Award from Bill Powanda, Vice-chair of the Valley Council.

The Valley Council of Health and Human Service Organizations (VCHHSO) presented the Lewis Savitsky Staff Excellence Award and the "VCHHSO Agency of the Year" Award at its annual Staff Conference, Thursday, April 23, 1998 at Derby High School.

Jack Walsh, Executive Director of Valley United Way received the Savitsky Staff Award for "life-time achievement as an employee in the nonprofit community in going above and beyond his/her daily job duties to positively impact the quality of life in the Lower Naugatuck Valley in multiple ways." The award is named in honor of Lewis Savitsky, a long time employee of Valley United Way who was active not only with Valley United Way, but also with multiple groups in the community.

Valley United Way was awarded the "Agency of the Year" Award as "a nonprofit agency whose employees and volunteers exemplify excellence in the community and whose programs and services made a significant and lasting contribution to the health and well being of the residents of the Lower Naugatuck Valley."

Walsh has been with Valley United Way since 1989 following many years as an educator in the Valley. During Jack's tenure, Valley United Way has grown as a community resource by adding the Youth Leadership Program, the Volunteer Action Center, and the Partner Agency Council which has since expanded to become the Valley Council for Health & Human Services. Jack is an active member of the community as Chair of Derby's Park & Recreation Commission and member of the Open Spaces Committee, Chair of the Electronic Valley Committee of the Healthy Valley 2000 project and a member and past president of the Derby/Shelton Rotary Club and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He is also a past recipient of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce's Gold Seal Award and is a corporator at Griffin Hospital and the Hewitt Organization.

Valley United Way is a leading funder of health and human service providers in the Lower Naugatuck Valley. It annually conducts a fund raising campaign that raises near a million dollars to support community services. Members of its board are also active in all areas of life in the community. United Way has been a leader in promoting cooperation and collaboration within the nonprofit community.
